America is heading for a boom, say experts

The good news is that the US economy grew at a 5 percent annual pace in the third quarter this year, revised up from the 3.9 percent that the Commerce Department had previously estimated. It’s the best quarterly growth since 2003, and, on the heels of the 4.6 percent growth in the second quarter, it’s also the best six months the economy has had in that long. The even better news, though, is that this growth, unlike every other uptick the past few years, looks sustainable. In other words, it isn’t a blip. It’s a boom.

Did the US knock out North Korea’s internet last night? Clue: yes

“We will respond proportionately, and in a space, time and manner that we choose,” Obama said yesterday of the North Korean internet attacks on Sony. Inevitably, many observers are speculating that the US is behind the attacks last night that closed down North Korea’s internet access, as the North Korea tech blog reported this morning. At time of writing North Korea’s internet is back up. But perhaps they got the message.

Update: Sony is to show The Interview at some cinemas in the US on Christmas Day.

Americans are now more attached to their cellphones and internet access than their televisions or landline telephones

Over half of internet users now say the internet would be “very hard” to give up. And among this devoted group, 61% say the internet is essential to them, either for work or other reasons. Translated to the whole population, 39% of all Americans feel they absolutely need to have internet access, says Pew.
