Facebook accounts for 30% of Americans’ mobile browsing time, compared with 11% for Google and YouTube combined.

Collecting data on users has helped Facebook become the world’s second-largest advertising company on mobile devices.

But Mark Zuckerberg wants to turn it into an even bigger part of the mobile ecosystem—hence the plans to develop Messenger and other messaging services into portals through which people can order taxis, communicate with businesses and so on.

Being as useful as it is addictive could win Facebook even more friends.

Nokia are suing Apple

The Finnish company alleges that Apple infringed on 32 patents covering displays, user interfaces, software, antennas, chipsets, and video coding. Apple has accused Nokia and Acacia Research Corp. of colluding to “extract and extort exorbitant revenues.” The suit is the latest in the smartphone patent wars, which began in 2011 when Apple filed a host of lawsuits against Samsung.

Facebook became the latest focus of the European Commission’s antitrust efforts. The EU’s executive branch accused the American social-media giant of providing misleading information as part of its takeover of WhatsApp, a messaging firm. Facebook said it would not be able to link users’ profiles across both platforms, but in August it announced plans, later rescinded, to share data between them.
