Standford University produces the most tech entrepreneurs

pitchbook_universities_report_2016-2017_edition_pdf__page_4_of_19_-1Stanford University (yet again) topped Pitchbook’s annual ranking of undergraduate colleges producing the most tech entrepreneurs who’ve raised venture capital between 2006 and August 15, 2017.

UC Berkeley came in close second, followed by MIT and Harvard.

Why it matters: While many entrepreneurs start their companies years after leaving school, others do so just after graduation or even while students (e.g., Facebook’s Zuckerberg or Snap’s Spiegel).

So looking at these rankings can provide some clues as to what resources or environment can be conducive to entrepreneurial endeavours.

Special Counsel is teaming up with agents from the IRS’s Criminal Investigations unit to help aide in his Russia probe, reports The Daily Beast’s Betsy Woodruff.

  • The unit, which Woodruff describes as “one of the federal government’s most tight-knit, specialized, and secretive investigative entities” focuses solely on financial crimes, such as tax evasion and money laundering.
  • The agency also has access to the president’s tax returns, which Trump has repeatedly refused to submit to the public.

How social media is used in a crisis

download

Social media proved to be a key search-and-rescue tool in Houston this weekend.

Identifying those who needed to be evacuated, connecting families, and recruiting volunteers are just a few ways sites like Twitter and Facebook were used.

Here are other ways social media has been used in a crisis:

  • Facebook’s Safety Check was used for the first time in the U.S. during the Pulse nightclub shooting.
  • Instagram was used during Harvey by people posting offers for shelter, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
  • A Google doc was made in response to the Boston Marathon bombing, where hundreds of people posted their information, offering food, shelter, and transportation.
  • Twitter was used to post addresses of those still stuck in their homes during Harvey.
  • Snapchat’s Snap Maps allowed people around the country to view in real time what was happening in Houston.

Tesla accused of intimidating employees who wanted to unionize

11-fascinating-things-tesla-billionaire-elon-musk-said-in-the-new-book-about-his-life

The National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint against Tesla following allegations that it was intimidating employees who wanted to unionize.

This follows four charges filed in February by the United Automobile Workers against Tesla for allegedly surveilling and coercing workers who attempted to distribute information about the union drive.

According to the NLRB’s complaint, obtained by Buzzfeed, Tesla security guards asked those workers to produce IDs and to leave the premises. It also mentions Tesla’s policy prohibiting workers from discussing their work environment with the media, sharing photos on social media, and forwarding work emails to a personal account.

Tesla dismisses the allegations as baseless. A hearing in front of a NLRB administrative judge is scheduled for Nov. 14.
