Two of the eight terrorists that struck Paris on Friday were identified as Brussels residents (paywall). Prosecutors have also revealed that two of the cars used by the Paris attackers were rental cars first hired in Brussels; one was found near the Bataclan concert hall, while the other was near a Paris cemetery. This is the fifth terrorist incident in the last in 18 months that has been linked with Belgium.

A calorie of sugar is far worse for kids than any other kind of calorie says this new report

Sugar-in-Kids-Diet-Infographic

This study demonstrates that ‘a calorie is not a calorie.’ Where those calories come from determines where in the body they go. Sugar calories are the worst, because they turn to fat in the liver, driving insulin resistance, and driving risk for diabetes, heart, and liver disease,” said lead author Robert Lustig, MD, MSL, pediatric endocrinologist at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco.

Emotions drive decisions

Image_Exhibit 2_2

This chart from McKinsey shows the primacy of emotions in retaining customers (which is so much more profitable than trying to get new ones.)

As the chart above shows, after a positive experience, more than 85 percent of customers increased their value to, in this case a bank, by purchasing more products or investing more of their assets; just as tellingly, more than 70 percent reduced their commitment when things turned sour.

Ad blocking is the largest boycott in human history. Now get ready for content blocking and more

3049653-poster-p-1-report-ad-blocking-robs-publishers-of-nearly-22-billion

According to PageFair and Adobe’s 2015 Global Adblocking Report, “there are now 198 million active adblock users around the world.”

Adblocking, it says, “grew by 41% globally in the last 12 months,” with annual growth rates of 48% in the U.S. and 82% in the U.K.

By now the number must be north of 200 million worldwide. If this be a boycott, it’s surely the largest in human history.

But Ad Blockers have been around for a while. Why is it spiking now? And what does it mean?

The reason for the popularity of ad blocking is retargeting. When ads for the boots you saw for sale at Site A follow you to Sites B, C, and D, that’s retargeting at work.

Not surprisingly, here is how interest in “retargeting” tracked along with “how to block ads”:

Don’t expect the blocking to stop at ads. Other forms of content blocking are on their way.

With the power to block content selectively, Consumers will be able to signal not only what they don’t want, but what they want and expect from the supply side of the marketplace. This will have far reaching consequences.  It’s not hard to see that it can’t be long before the adtech bubble bursts and surveillance-based marketing takes a dive.

Meanwhile,  Customer Commons and others in the VRM (vendor relationship management) development community are already working on terms that only start with tracking preferences.

These can expand to include conditions for voluntary data sharing, expressing buying interests, and providing standard means for connecting with loyalty programs, call centres and other CRM (customer relationship management) systems on the vendors’ side.

Expect to see plenty of news about these and other expressions of individual agency online over the coming months.
